Eric Clapton joins Yoko Ono, Klaus Voorman, and others for BAM
Yoko Ono’s 77th birthday celebration has gotten her performed a very special concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Tuesday, 16th February 2010. On stage was the “new” Plastic Ono Band – Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Sean Lennon, Haruomi Hosono, Yuka Honda and Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada, Naoki Shimizu and Yuko Araki) who performed an opening set that included “It Happened,” “Rising” and “Walking On Thin Ice”. The second half of the show featured guest artists performing Ono’s compositions. The evening culminated with a reunion by original Plastic Ono Band members Eric Clapton and Klaus Voorman joining Ono, Lennon and Jim Keltner on “Yer Blues” (vocals by Sean Lennon), “Death of Samantha” on which Eric soloed throughout and a very heavy version of “Don’t Worry Kyoko.”
Bette Midler, Paul Simon, Gene Ween, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, and Jake Shears and Ana Matronic from Scissor Sisters have also been featured in the concert as guest appearances.
The Plastic Ono Band was initially put together by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969. The band had a flexible lineup and the name was used by both Lennon and Ono on solo projects through 1975 to descibe whoever was performing with them. One of the earliest lineups – and the one that recorded Live Peace In Toronto – featured Lennon, Ono, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voorman, and Alan White. Clapton was also featured on “Don’t Worry Kyoko” from Ono’s 1971 album, Fly. In 2009, Yoko Ono revived the name and spirit of the Plastic Ono Band for the critically acclaimed recording “Between My Head And The Sky.”
The event was filmed and recorded for official release.
A “dress rehearsal”–with reasonably priced tickets available to the general public – took place at the venue on Monday evening, 15 February. Although Eric did not appear, Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Jake Shears, Ana Matronic, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon did turn up.

Mother Jones: 15 mins with Yoko Ono
Yoko Ono still wants to reconnect humanity with its long-lost id. From Fluxus to songstress, the 77-year-old has used every free-associative vocal, literary, and visual avant-garde tool at her disposal to help resuscitate the uncensored thoughts of audiences around the world. Born in 1933 in Japan, Ono was the first female artist to market experimental primal wails as legitimate music at a time when demure vulnerability was prized over a woman’s angst-ridden screams. Her proto-feminist punk, often orgasmic vocals were inspired by childbirth; musically, her spawn includes bands like Deerhoof, Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, Bikini Kill and the whole riot grrrl gang- who owe their flagrant embrace of the loud and the absurd to Ono’s radical displays of freedom.

Yoko Ono in Oakland -- between our heads and the rainy sky
It was rainy last night in Oakland, CA., but that didn't stop fans of Yoko Ono from selling out the renovated Fox Theatre for a rare show by Yoko, Sean Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band.
The evening opened with local progressive band Deerhoof, for which the word "unexpected" is an excellent description. Their set, which included all four members switching off on different instruments, included everything from improvisation to a faithful rendition of Canned Heat's "Going Up the Country."
After a short break, Yoko Ono's set opened with an emotion-grabbing short biographical film that included clips of her life (with a few rare ones) of her life with John Lennon, including a shot of his blood-stained glasses after his death. Ono has never been one to shy away from the controversial or the uncomfortable.
Some of the Lennon clips were emotional to view. A brief clip of John and Yoko giving advice to protesters in Berkeley, which is right up the road from Oakland, received some notable applause.
We really wish some of those rarely seen films that were included here were seen more often. They give a better view beyond the usual "Two Virgins" cover shot of what John Lennon and Yoko Ono were all about -- their naked emotions, not their naked bodies.
Before Ono came on stage, the crowd was treated to animation of Ono with birds flying out of her mouth, a design matching a t-shirt being sold in the lobby. Also for sale were CD and vinyl copies of her "Between My Head and the Sky" album.
Then it was time, as John Lennon once said, for Ono to "do her thing all over you." The set list included several tracks from her recent album, "Between My Head and the Sky," and a few golden oldies from the Apple Records days, which, according to a recent interview with her, she is considering reissuing.
"Walking on Thin Ice," the song she was working on in the recording studio with Lennon the night of his death, still sounds as powerful live as it did in the released studio version. "Death of Samantha," another Apple oldie, was a great nostalgic choice.
While the Oakland show didn't have the abundant guest list that the recent Brooklyn show did, there were a couple of notable guest performers. Harper Simon, Paul Simon's son, who was at the Brooklyn performance, joined in on acoustic guitar. And Jaron Lanier, who Sean Lennon credited as a man who could play hundreds of instruments, played a few of those during the set. Besides Ono, Simon, Lanier and Lennon, the band also included Yuka Honda on bass.
"The Sun Is Down," which has such a bounce on the album, was augmented here with vocals by Sean Lennon and video animation in the background.
The evening climaxed with a full-tilt replay of the original Plastic Ono Band with Ono and the band performing "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mommy's Only Looking For Her Hand in the Snow)" and leading a sing-along of "Give Peace a Chance" to close out the show. The crowd, which included "Lost Lennon Tapes" host Elliot Mintz, cheered wildly.
But when you think about it, "Give Peace a Chance" was an ironically common moment of what had been a most uncommon night.
Yoko Ono's Oakland set list:
1. IT HAPPENED 2. D TRAIN 3. BETWEEN MY HEAD & THE SKY 4. RISING 5. WALKING ON THIN ICE 6. WILL I (enter Harper & Jaron) 7. MOVING MOUNTAINS (Harper /Jaron) 8. CALLING (Harper/Jaron/Yuka- bass 9. SUN IS DOWN 10. DEATH OF SAMANTHA 11. MINDTRAIN 12. HIGA NOBURU
ENCORE 13. MULBERRY (w/ Jaron) 14. DON'T WORRY KYOKO (W/ Deerhoof) 15. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

Live: Yoko Ono Plastic Band at the Fox Theater .
Better than: Playing The Beatles: Rock Band
When I told friends and Facebook contacts that I'd be seeing Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band during Noise Pop, the reactions were split down the middle. Half the responses were incredulous. You'd pay money to see her? The other half was excited, and dare I say it - a little jealous? But this is to be expected with Ono, whose artistic efforts have always had a galvanizing affect.

Yoko Ono: Enjoying music is enjoying life (LA Record)
Yoko Ono is one of the most polarizing figures in rock ‘n’ roll history. The people that love her LOVE her and the people who don’t love her never will. Aside from being married to John Lennon, she also created the blueprint for avant-punk and electronic music, and remixes of her songs have been regularly charting in the top ten of Billboard’s dance music chart for the last decade. Ono has an amazing new CD, Between My Head and the Sky, that continues her artistic progression and has to be the greatest rock record ever recorded by a 76-year-old.

Yoko Ono: The Other Rooms (Hardcover)

Hardcover: 252 pages Publisher: Charta/Wunternaum Press (January 31, 2010) Language: English ISBN-10: 8881587556 ISBN-13: 978-8881587551 Product Dimensions: 5.7 x 5.6 x 1.1 inches
The Other Rooms is a sequel to Yoko Ono's Grapefruit, a now classic artist's book that was first published in 1964 and became a cult classic following its wider distribution after 1970. Matching the satisfyingly compact size of Grapefruit, and beautifully bound in white cloth, The Other Rooms is conceived as a series of rooms that unfold the story of, in the words of the artist, "the life of a woman seeing through the eyes of her son." On page after page, or room after room, Ono walks the reader through her unique expression of motherly utopian pedagogy, providing observations and instruction "pieces" such as the following, for "Balance Piece": a) Politicians should wear pink transparent loose robes or pajama-like outfits without the bottoms at all times. b) A priest should wear a bright red suit with one sleeve and bell-bottom pants with his penis exposed at all times. c) The army should wear drag (cocktail party-type flair skirts) and high-heel shoes with jewelry (earrings, etc.) Other sequences simply describe imaginary rooms, and invite the reader to inhabit them, or suggest new approaches to tasks such as gardening, or to one's hometown, all in the serenely open style for which Ono is so famed. The Other Rooms is joyfully interactive in this sense, finding ways "to open doors where there are no doors."

Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth.
Brooklyn Academy Of Music.

A QUIET REVOLUTION by YOKO ONO – speech for Oxford University, March 10, 2010

A butterfly is hopping from flower to flower. Oh, good. I think. The butterfly is busybodying as usual. Peace reins. But what is the butterfly really doing?
When a tiny movement like the flapping of the wings of a butterfly brings about a big change elsewhere, it’s called the butterfly effect in physics. I’ve just heard this one… so I don’t know it’s legitimacy. But if they don’t call it a butterfly effect, there should be a word that expresses this phenomenon. A breeze created by a bunch of kids dancing bringing a stop to an argument going on in the other side of the globe unknown to the dancers? Why not? The latest news is that even a couch potato is useful for us, in that their breathing helps to balance the atmosphere. The world and it’s mechanics are still very much a mystery.

Yoko Ono scores number 1 dance club hit
Yoko Ono fans, break out your pant-suits, fedoras, and eerily emotionless stares, because Ono is storming the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Charts all the way to number one with the single, Give Me Something. It's a buzzy, synthy remix of her track of the same name from John and Yoko's Double Fantasy album. http://beatcrave.com/2010-04-05/yoko-ono-scores-number-1-dance-club-hit/ |
