Report: McCartney Glasgow gig to be announced; is Paul on his farewell tour?

Paul McCartney will perform in Glasgow for the first in 20 years, according to a report today in the Scottish Daily Record. There's been no official announcement of the gig as of yet.

The paper says the date, which will take place this summer, won't be announced for 48 hours, but will take place June 20 in Hampden Park.

"Paul has always loved playing in Glasgow since his early days with The Beatles. He has a great affection for Scotland and his home in Mull of Kintyre in particular," the paper quoted a McCartney associate.

He last played the city on June 23, 1990, at the SECC as part of Glasgow's celebrations as European City of Culture. A scheduled show in Celtic Park in 2003 was canceled.

"There have been a few missed opportunities over the years but Paul is thrilled Hampden is the venue. He loves Scotland and wants to play there again. It will be one of his greatest gigs ever," the associate told the paper.

One interesting note in the story repeats the oft-reported rumor that "Macca's farewell tour will last right up to his 70th birthday," which means McCartney, who'll be 68 this year, could be making his last stops at the upcoming venues on the Up and Coming Tour. Or not.

Sir Paul McCartney prepares for first British stadium tour

Sir Paul McCartney is to play his first ever British stadium tour.

The Beatles legend will play concerts at stadiums across the nation during the jaunt this summer

The concerts will include dates at the 70,000 capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff; Hampden Park in Glasgow – which can hold up to 90,000 people - and the RDS Staduum in Dublin, which can hold 35,000.

The singer – who will celebrate his 68th birthday in the middle of the jaunt on June 18 - will also play at the Isle Of Wight festival and at Hyde Park.

There is also speculation he will announce a further date at Wembley Stadium in the coming weeks.

If he does, it will be McCartney’s first solo concert at the legendary North London venue. He has previously only played there as part of multi-artist concerts, including Live Aid in 1985.

Despite the advancing years, he will play for almost three hours at each concert.

Sir Paul’s tour will also include a headline slot at the Isle Of Wight festival on the final night of the three-day event on June 13.

He will play Dublin on June 12; Hampden Park on June 20; Cardiff on June 26 and Hyde Park on June 27.

A source revealed: ‘It is really amazing really for a man of his age to embark on such a gruelling, massive tour.

‘Put simply, these will be his biggest ever shows in Britain. So, really, it just shows what great shape he is in.’

McCartney himself said: 'It's always brilliant to play for the home crowd adn these dates are the ones that me and the band are really exacited about.'

Sir Paul’s last tour of Britain took place in 2003 when he performed arena venues.

Since then, he has only played occasional concerts, including his triumphant Christmas show at the O2 Arena which was attended by celebs including Kate Moss, David and Victoria Beckham, Madonna and Gary Barlow.

The former Beatle is ready to announce the jaunt just days after his son James also began a – rather smaller – British tour.

The 32-year-old began the tour, his first, in Liverpool – his father’s home city – last Wednesday night at the city’s O2 Academy in front of a crowd of hundreds rather than the tens of thousands who will watch his father.

During the 14-song set, he even paid homage to his father with a performance of song I Love You Dad.

At the end of the concert, a thrilled James said: ‘You are a heavenly audience. You’ve been the best audience in the whole wide world.’

Special UK & Ireland Live Shows Announced

Special UK & Ireland Live Shows Announced

Saturday 12th June – RDS, Dublin
Sunday 13th June – Isle Of Wight Festival
Sunday 20th June – Hampden Park, Glasgow
Saturday 26th June – Millennium Stadium, Cardiff
Sunday 27th June – Hyde Park Calling, London

The UK is set for a scorching hot summer of rock n' roll as Paul McCartney today announces five special massive UK and Ireland shows as part of his 2010 'Up and Coming' tour. Hot off the heels of announcing the opening US tour dates, Paul's announcement confirms the speculation that he's bringing his all new tour home. This summer Paul will rock the UK and Ireland with 5 massive shows that mark some career firsts for music's most valuable treasure.

Paul said: "It's always brilliant to play for the home crowd and these dates are ones that me and the band are really excited about."

Paul's first UK and Ireland appearance of 2010 will take place in Dublin at the RDS on Saturday 12th of June, six months after Paul’s sell-out show at The O2 in December as part of the ‘Good Evening Europe’ tour. The next day will see a Paul McCartney first when he headlines the Isle Of Wight Festival on Sunday 13th of June; his second ever UK festival after his now legendary headline appearance at 2004’s Glastonbury. Next up Paul will head to Scotland for, amazingly, his first ever UK standalone stadium show on Sunday 20th June at Glasgow’s Hampden Park, almost exactly 20 years to the day since Paul last played in Scotland. On Saturday 26th June Paul plays his first show in Wales in 31 years when he brings the tour to Cardiff’s massive Millennium Stadium. He last toured Wales with Wings in 1979. Finally Paul will appear as the headline act in London at this year’s Hyde Park Calling festival. Paul has appeared in Hyde Park twice before - the first time was when he opened and closed 2005’s Live 8 concert and the second when he came on stage as a surprise guest last summer at Neil Young’s show to perform The Beatles anthem ‘A Day In The Life’.

These shows will feature a typically diverse set of music from all of Paul’s unrivalled career, with songs from The Beatles, Wings and Paul’s solo work, including tracks from The Fireman’s 2008 album ‘Electric Arguments’.

The UK got a recent taste for Paul’s live show last Christmas when he brought his 2009 ‘Good Evening Europe’ tour to a climactic and memorable finale at London’s O2 Arena, his only UK show of 2009. Reviews for the show were phenomenal and prove that Paul McCartney is a live experience that no-one should miss. “The man is living history and the way he continues to bring new energy to his past is incredible,’ reported the UK’s largest Sunday paper, News Of The World. The Telegraph exclaimed, “Paul McCartney used his only UK concert of 2009 as a showcase for an epic display of back-to-back basics music-making. Armed only with his four-piece band and the greatest collection of hits in pop history, he travelled back and forth across the decades like the Dr Who of rock and roll. Whatever elixir the 67-year-old Macca is running on remains a mystery, but he seems to get a huge charge from performing to an audience, especially one that is bombarding him with waves of adoration.”

Paul’s live shows have reached a new legendary status in recent years garnering unprecedented reviews from fans and critics alike wherever he goes. He’s pushed boundaries, performed to millions and made global news with monumental shows including performances in Red Square, Russia, outside the Coliseum in Rome, performing live into a NASA space station, the largest outdoor show ever in the Ukraine, his first visit to Tel Aviv and last year his ‘Summer 09’ tour began in earnest with an already legendary inaugural run of shows at New York’s Citi Field Stadium, the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles played the 1965 concert that set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show. Critics hailed the Citi Field performances, seen by over 100,000 people, as the concert experience of a lifetime.

This summer’s run of UK live shows are set to be the hottest tickets of the year. Don’t miss your chance to be there and witness some of that marvellous Macca magic.

Paul McCartney will headline Sunday in Hyde Park

Hard Rock International and Live Nation announce today that PAUL MCCARTNEY will be headlining Sunday 27 June at HARD ROCK CALLING 2010 in Hyde Park, London. From the days of The Beatles to the present this will be McCartney’s first-ever full-blown headlining gig in Hyde Park. Tickets go on sale for Sunday 27 June at 9am on 5 March.

Paul’s live shows have reached a new legendary status in recent years garnering unprecedented reviews from fans and critics alike wherever he goes. He’s pushed boundaries, performed to millions and made global news with monumental shows including performances in Red Square, Russia, outside the Coliseum in Rome, performing live into a NASA space station, the largest outdoor show ever in the Ukraine, his first visit to Tel Aviv. Last year, his ‘Summer 09’ tour began in earnest with an already legendary inaugural run of shows at New York’s Citi Field Stadium, the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles played the 1965 concert that set the precedent for the modern day stadium rock show. Critics hailed the Citi Field performances, seen by over 100,000 people, as the concert experience of a lifetime. This special show is part of Paul's all new 'Up and Coming Tour,’ which starts in the US in March and comes to the UK and Ireland in June.

Paul has appeared in Hyde Park twice before - he opened and closed 2005’s Live 8 concert and most recently he surprised fans last summer at Hard Rock Calling during Neil Young’s set to perform The Beatles anthem ‘A Day In The Life’. Paul McCartney commented, "My last show of 2009 was in London at The O2 Arena and we had a great night, there was a great party atmosphere. I hope that this summer we can have an even bigger party in Hyde Park. I've had a little taste of performing in the park when I guested briefly with Neil Young there last summer and it tasted good. So I'm looking forward to getting there with the band and performing our own show."

Hard Rock Calling 2010 is already set to be the festival to go to this summer. Opening the weekend in true Hard Rock style will be The Hives, The Gaslight Anthem, Wolfmother, Ben Harper & Relentless7 and headliners Pearl Jam. Following the success of last year’s sold-out festival Hard Rock Calling 2010 is shaping up to follow suit, promising three days of unparalleled music and an ultimate London festival experience. Saturday’s headliner and more of the line-up for the weekend will be announced shortly.

Paul McCartney’s headline appearance at Hyde Park sees him join a long line of rock and roll greats that have headlined in this iconic location, they include, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Aerosmith, The Police, Neil Young, The Killers and Eric Clapton.

Cubs get go-ahead for concert on Yom Kippur

The Cubs got the go-ahead Wednesday to hold a nighttime concert at Wrigley Field on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, but they’ll bend over backwards to minimize conflict.

Mike Lufrano, Cubs senior vice-president of community affairs, said the time of the Saturday, Sept. 18 concert — by either the Dave Matthews Band, Paul McCartney or Phish — will be pushed back until after sundown, when Yom Kippur ends.

Because the Sept. 17 concert coincides with Kol Nidre, the start of Yom Kippur, the Cubs have reached out to all three synagogues in the area: Anshe Emet, 3751 N. Broadway; Anshe Sholom, 540 W. Melrose and Temple Sholom, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive.

“It’s really parking that they’re most concerned about. You won’t hear it because they’re far enough away. But, it’s fans coming to hear the concert at the same time people are going to worship,” said Lufrano, who is Jewish and plans to miss his first Wrigley concert to celebrate the holiday.

“We’re talking to them about parking lots that we could shuttle people from. There will be additional parking available with shuttle service provided.”

Lufrano noted that fewer people drive to concerts than to Cubs games, leaving team lots at two-thirds capacity.

“We should have space available in our lots if people want to park. But, it may or may not be the most convenient,” Lufrano said.

“We may end up working with the Park District about Waveland Park or other places. We’ll find a place where people who are going to synagogue don’t have to worry about looking for parking. They can park in a lot and take a bus.”

Rabbi Michael Siegel of Anshe Emet could not be reached for comment. Prior to Wednesday’s vote by the City Council’s License Committee, Chairman Eugene Schulter (47th) reported that Siegel had sent a letter endorsing the September concerts.

Last summer, the Cubs held an unprecedented three Wrigley concerts in one summer week — two by Elton John and Billy Joel, one by Rascal Flatts.

When the Southport Neighbors Association argued that it was too much, in part because of a conflict with the group’s neighborhood festival, local Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) called it a one-year experiment. He promised that, if it didn’t go well, “There’ll be no more concerts.”

On Wednesday, Tunney argued that the three-concert experiment was so successful, thanks to “neighborhood protections,” it’s worth repeating.

But, since Elton John and Billy Joel have cancelled their summer tour, Tunney asked the License Committee to approve only the two September dates. The Cubs may or may not seek approval for an additional concert in July.

“We’d like to. We’re working on that. But, we didn’t have anything today,” Lufrano said. “It highlights how difficult it is to find the right act to play in Wrigley Field.”

Paul McCartney at Rentschler? Probably not

A report that a Paul McCartney concert at Rentschler Field is "in the works" is wrong.

WVIT-TV, Channel 30 (NBC Connecticut), this afternoon cited a report that a Rentschler stop is "very likely."

Not so, says Jim Koplik, president of Live Nation Connecticut, which is set to take the lead in booking concerts at Rentschler. Live Nation is promoting four other McCartney shows in the United States this spring, but there are no plans for an East Hartford performance.

"We talked about it with him, and it's off the table," Koplik told me. Although Koplik noted that "it could go back on the table," a Rentschler date is not currently under discussion.

Isle of Wight Festival Tickets Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney says: “I always remember hearing such great things about this festival and it has such a sense of history with the likes of Jimi Hendrix playing there the first time round. This will be my first show on the Isle of Wight and I’m looking forward to a rollicking night of rock n’ roll”.

The UK got a recent taste for Paul’s live show last Christmas when he bought his 2009 ‘Good Evening Europe’ tour to a climatic and memorable finale at London’s 02 Arena, his only UK show of 2009.

Newest Paul McCartney Up and Coming tour rumor: A stop in Pittsburgh?

This was tweeted by Bill King, editor of Beatlefan, who tells us the tip came from the magazine's Brad Hundt, who lives in the area:

"New 20,000-seat arena opens in Pittsburgh late summer and they're promising someone 'prestigious' is going to be the first act booked. Hmmm."

Big Names Coming To Pittsburgh

If you're in the market for some big name entertainment, Pittsburgh may be the right place to be over the summer and fall.

Some national entertainers have included Pittsburgh on their tour schedules.

The Dave Matthews Band has already been announced for July 10 at PNC Park.

Another big show could be returning to the 'Burgh – Elton John and Billy Joel – also at PNC Park.

"See this smile? When I hear names like Elton John, Billy Joel as a business owner it makes me so happy to see that the city is trying to rebuild this area and give it the attention it deserves," Bubba, owner of Mullen's Bar and Restaurant, said.

The concert is expected to be officially announced next week but the website VivdSeats.com is already offering tickets for sale to the July 14 event.

There may be more on the horizon.

When the Consol Energy Center opens later this year, big names like Paul McCartney or Bon Jovi could end up christening the center stage.

"Everybody knows that a new building is going to have advantages for some of the big shows," Ed Traversari, a promoter, said. "A lot of technical advantages."

With 38,000 seats at PNC Park and some 18,000 at the new Consol Energy Center, both have the potential to be popular with performers and fans.

An Up and Coming Artist Uses Europe’s Most Successful Music Venue For Rehearsals

London’s O2 Arena Used For Band Practice

By night London’s O2 Arena is the place to be. It has quickly established itself as the premier music venue in Europe. It’s attracted the biggest names in the world of entertainment and visitors flock there from each corner of the globe.

Visitors to The O2 complex over the last few days got an unexpected surprise when they visited the London landmark. The sounds of a band rocking out could be heard filtering through the building. How could this be? There were no major shows booked at the venue. On closer inspection the loud band appeared to be playing Paul McCartney songs and the singer was doing a great impression of music’s most treasured icon.

Visitors could hear some of the world’s most seminal anthems being belted out, but the closeness to the originals was just too uncanny. Crowds of people were gathering by the stage doors just to hear what was happening. What was going on inside?

Three months after bringing his ‘Good Evening Europe’ tour to a close with London’s biggest Christmas show at the O2, Paul McCartney was back. This time though he was using the arena as his rehearsal room. Along with his band Paul had started work on putting the finishing touches to his new live show.

Paul McCartney’s brand new ‘Up and Coming Tour’ starts in just a matter of weeks in the US. The show, which features a huge production and elaborate staging, needed a place big enough to use for rehearsals. The O2 Arena is the perfect place. Paul’s crew have built inside the venue an exact mock up of how Paul’s stage will look, including massive video screens, state of the art sound equipment, pyro and elaborate lighting.

The tour needs 31 trucks to carry all its equipment and employs a full time crew of over 150 people to make it all work. The total weight of all the tour’s equipment is a whopping 125,000 pounds! The indoor concerts on the tour use 90 speakers and the outdoor stadium shows use 130. Backstage at each show there are 14 touring offices and dressing rooms. The tour serves approximately 480 vegetarian meals a day to keep the crew going.

Paul’s final show of 2009 at the O2 Arena was his first ever public appearance there. However back in 2004, before the venue was up and running, Paul used the Millennium Dome (as it was then known) to rehearse for his massive 2004 stadium tour. The tour ended with a headline performance at the Glastonbury Festival, which has gone down in rock folklore as the greatest festival moment ever. Rehearsals at the Dome were meant to be top secret but Paul was soon found out after a local resident complained about the noise upsetting his cat!

The UK leg of the ‘Up and Coming Tour’ starts on Sunday 13th June at the Isle of Wight Festival and closes in London in Hyde Park on Sunday 27th June as part of the Hard Rock Calling shows.

Talking about performing in London Paul said, “My last show of 2009 was in London at The O2 Arena and we had a great night, there was a great party atmosphere. I hope that this summer we can have an even bigger party in Hyde Park. I've had a little taste of performing in the park when I guested briefly with Neil Young there last summer and it tasted good. So I'm looking forward to getting there with the band and performing our own show."

Sir Paul McCartney performs at the O2... but just for a bit of practice

It is a far cry from the front room of 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool.
That is the location where a teenage Sir Paul McCartney used to practice with John Lennon and his fellow Quarrymen more than 50 years ago.
But these days McCartney uses rather more grandiose venues to rehearse with his band

In fact, the 67-year-old has been preparing for his forthcoming tour – by rehearsing at the 23,000 capacity O2 Arena in south east London, one of Europe's biggest indoor venues.
McCartney secretly used the concert hall in South East London last Wednesday and Thursday, ahead of the beginning of his ‘Up And Coming’ jaunt in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend.
The tour comes to Britain in the summer, starting at the Isle of Wight festival on June 13 before finishing in Hyde Park, London at the Hard Rock Calling concert two weeks later.

The mammoth operation will need 31 trucks to carry all its equipment and will employ a full time crew of more than 150 people. And the outdoor stadium shows will use an astonishing 130 speakers.
It is all very different to his humble upbringing in the Liverpool suburb of Allerton.
Then he, John Lennon and George Harrison used to rehearse in the front room of the former council house, which is now owned by the National Trust because of it’s historic value.

It's official: McCartney's 'Up and Coming Tour' won't be his last

Every time Paul McCartney goes out on the road, there are always rumors that it willl be the last time.

The question has been answered, for now, in this excerpt of a new posting by McCartney spokesman Stuart Bell on the official website Paul McCartney.com today.

"At the end of the interview we talk about the fact that every time Paul announces a tour someone in the world writes, ‘This is Paul McCartney’s Final Ever Tour’. He tells us that he always receives a flurry of texts from his friends saying they will have to come and see his show as they don’t want to miss the last one! Paul jokes that it is ‘probably a promoter trying to sell tickets’.

"For the record, we can confirm this is not Paul’s final tour. I made a note to myself that next time Paul announces a tour he should call it ‘This Is Not The Final Paul McCartney Tour’, although I expect some hack looking for a story somewhere would still manage to interpret that as Paul announcing his last ever tour!"
